Week 14 Project U

I started my inspiration with five environmental pictures of old Shanghai, link back to my childhood and root, I select some image with grocery store, bedroom and other street life. After collecting 30 words to describe me, yellow and camera became the two words I mainly wanted to explore. There are many sun-baked quilts in my photos, which is a very interesting phenomenon, because in childhood, there is a saying - sun-baked quilts will have the smell of the sun. At the same time, I have a deep attachment to beds, because I have lived in different environments, from a bed at home, a bunk in a four-person dormitory, a boarding home, and a student apartment. Each type of room has a special meaning for me. So I combined the pictures of the bed with the pictures of the quilt for paper manipulation. Having explored Grayson Perry’screative narrative in his childhood bear, I started to relate this to my stories and things around me. I want to make the details from life into fantasy garments that can be understood by an audience. I have a teddy who has been cuddling with me for 16 years, when I hug her, she feels my temperature and skin. As I have grown older, she has felt my body’s changes and stages at different ages. I have divided my growth into four stages, and the dominant color in each stage represents a state in that period. I drew my childhood memories in the form of illustrations and drew my four states on acetate with markers and cut them out. I took pictures of the teddy and put them on these acetate silhouettes, which means that no matter how I change she's always there for me. The illustrations are inspiration pages to record my growing up from Teddy’s perspective, so I made these illustrations into little blankets and then hugged them in different ways to alter their shapes, which symbolized I am embracing my past. The presentation of the design represents the bond between me and Teddy, so I used textile techniques and beading to amplify the idea of bacteria and body odor generated when I touched the bear, making the form of the bear more ‘biological’. The wearable garment brings together all these ideas and sentiments and the ordinary details are magnified and the story between bear and me is more embodied by such texture.
